Homework
When students arrive each day, they should bring their homework folder to school. In student's homework folder should always be their behavior calender and their spelling square choices. I will be recording when homework is turned in each day. Homework will reflect student's effort grade.
Reading Fluency:
Part of each child's homework is to read aloud a passage every night. They will read the same passage every night for a week and answer three of four questions about the passage. I am asking that an adult or older sibling time the student reading for one minute, help correct any errors, record their work together, and model fluent reading for the student. The fluency page for each week will be due on Friday.
These are the steps for the nightly assignment:
1. Student read the entire passage to him/ herself.
2. Students reads aloud the passage to the adult/ parent, who is timing them for EXACTLY one minute. During this time the parent is also keeping track of (counting) any errors the child makes while reading, but DOES NOT try to correct the child at this time.
3. Adult/ parent records on the homework sheet the number of words read in a minute (use the numbers at the end of each line to help you add quickly), and the number of errors.
4. Adult/ parent NOW points our and corrects the errors made by the child.
5. Adult/ parent might consider reading the passage to the child as well. This process should be repeated every night, Monday through Thursday.
Spelling Squares: Each month, students will have a different spelling calender. This calender will states a variety of different activities they will complete Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday for homework. Students will need to choose three spelling squares to complete on a notebook piece of paper each week and turn this in on Wednesday. I will not collect spelling squares until Wednesday.
Math and Grammar Homework: Monday and Wednesday, students will have a math assignment to complete and turn in the following day. This will reflect what we have done in class that day. On Thursday, students grammar homework will be sent home and will need to be returned the following day also. This will review our grammar concept for the week.
Homeworkopoly: Every Friday, students will have the option to play Homeworkopoly! In order for students to qualify to play they must turn in ALL homework throughout the week. If a student completes all of the homework throughout the week, they will get to roll the dice and move their picture around the game board. They will earn prizes when landing on a square. This is such a fun game that helps encourage students to complete their homework each night.
75 Book Challenge: I challenge your child to read 75 books and turn in their reading chain before Christmas break! After Christmas, they will be given this challenge again. They will be challenged to read 75 more books by the end of the year. This will equal 150 books by the end of the year! How exciting! I know they can do it! The purpose of this challenge is to get your child reading books they normally wouldn't. Each child will have a book challenge packet. They will be making a book chain to show how many books they have read. After your child has read 75 books and turned in their chain, they will get to write with mechanical pencil in the classroom! How fun!
The Rules:
1. Each book must be read by your child.
2. It can be any book they choose.
3. For each book read, cut off a strip of paper given to them in their challenge packet, write the title of the book and add this book to their book chain.
Homework each week will be as follows unless it states differently on the weekly newsletter
Monday
- Reading Fluency
- Spelling Square
- Math Worksheet
Tuesday
- Reading Fluency
- Spelling Square
- Study for Spelling Test
Wednesday (3 Spelling Squares are Due)
- Reading Fluency
- Math Worksheet
Thursday
- Reading Fluency
- Spelling Square
- Grammar Worksheet
Friday (Reading Fluency Passage Due)
- No Homework :)
I will not accept any homework the week after it is due. If students do not turn in homework it will result in a zero for the week which can drastically affect their grade. Each math or grammar homework assignment is worth 2 points (6 points per week), each spelling square is worth 2 points each (6 points per week), and fluency homework is worth 10 points each week (about half their homework grade). This results in 22 points per week. Student’s homework is assigned to help them with the concepts we are working on in class. Please help your child, when possible, to ensure they understand this concept. Let’s work together to make this school year a wonderful one! I am looking forward to working with you and your child!
