Morning Arrival: Students should arrive at school at 8:30 am. Please do not send your child any earlier than this, as the school doors will not be open (unless eating breakfast- breakfast starts at 8:15 am). This is a school policy. Student should come straight to the classroom and start on their morning work. If students arrive later than 8:45 am, they will be marked tardy.
Dismissal: It is school policy that if you are picking your child up from school that you must park in the back of the school (by the playground). If your child is getting home from school a different way, I must have a note. We will dismiss at 3:10 pm.
Sick/ Absent Days: If your child is not going to be at school, please contact the office by 9 am. If you have a vacation or your child has an appointment, send me a note so I can let the office know.
Behavior: Each student will have a clip on our classroom clip chart. All students will start the day on green. This is an A for the day. Students will receive a warning before they have to move their clip down on our clip chart. If a student has to move down on the clip chart they would go from green (A) to orange (B), then yellow (C), and then to red (D). The color of day each student receives will be marked on their behavior calender at the end of each day. If a student does not have a green day, I will write why that student had to move their clip down. If a student has excellent behavior, that student will get to move their clip up on the chart to pink! This is an A++ for the day. Every time a student receives pink, they will get a gem on their clip. After 5 gems, that student gets to add their clip to the CLIP HALL OF FAME! How exciting! They will then receive a sparkly clip to put on the clip chart. If a student receives a red for the day, a letter will be sent home that you will need to sign and return to school the next day.
Lunch: Your child has a lunch number that helps us keep computer records of money spent on lunch. This number is the same as previous years. At the beginning of the year, please help your child remember this number. Our lunch and recess time is from 12:00- 12:35. Please pay e-funds or send lunch money in an envelope clearly marked “lunch money,” with your child’s first and last name.
Star Student of the Week: Each student will have the opportunity to be Star Student for a week. I will try my hardest to match the week for your child to be Star student with their birthday or half birthday (if they have a summer birthday). Please have your child complete the Star Student poster the week it is sent home, and it will find a special place in our classroom.
George's Travel Journal: George is our classroom stuffed animals that gets to come home with the Student of the Week. He can spend time with you traveling throughout the week, stay home, and just have fun. Please help your child write in his journal about your travels throughout the week. You can include photos or draw a picture. He is also washable and can go in the dryer if a bath is needed. Please return him in his original bag on Monday, so I can send George home with the next Star Student that day.
Birthdays: It is school policy that invitations to children’s birthday party may not be passed out here at school unless there is an invitation for EVERY child in the class. You are welcome (but not required) to send in special treats for your child’s birthday (if treats require forks, plates, etc., please send in those as well). Please do not send any food with nut products. The products must be store bought.
Toys/ Games: Please do not allow your child to bring any toys or games to school.
Communication: The best way to contact me in through my e-mail, as I check this periodically throughout the day. You can also call the office and leave a message. I will get back with you as soon as possible. If you would like to send a note to school, please send it in your child's homework folder. I check all folders in the morning.
Testing: We will have all reading tests on Friday and spelling tests on Wednesday. We will go over all of the material at school, but please make sure to review at home. Vocabulary will be included in the reading test. I will always post the vocabulary words in our newsletter.
Accelerated Reader: Every 9 weeks of school your child will have the goal of five points to earn for Accelerated Reader. To earn points, students will read a book (I prefer more than once to ensure understanding) and log online at school to take a short reading comprehension test on the book read. Students will earn points based on the reading level of the book. Students will have time to take these tests all throughout the week in the classroom and computer lab. If a student reaches their goal, they will receive a special treat from me!
Classroom Visits: If you would like to have a conference with me please schedule a time with me first. I would love to answer any of your questions or concerns you may have! In order to make sure that I am available for your or that we are not interrupting your child’s learning, please schedule a time with me first. I think it is very important that we work together to ensure your child’s success in the classroom.
Gym Shoes: Please make sure your child has gym shoes at school each day. Second grade has P.E. at 10:00 each day. In order for them to participate, they need to wear the correct attire. This includes no marking soles on shoes, no jewelry, and hair in a pony tail.
Library: Our library day is Wednesday at 9:30 am. Students will be allowed to check out on library book per week. This book will be allowed to come home but must be returned the following week in order for them to check out a new book.
